Takata ammonium-nitrate inflators can rupture when they deploy. Metal fragments enter the cabin. Age, heat, and humidity make unused passenger inflators worse, not better. A 2003 Honda Accord is the bay’s demo car for a reason: run that VIN on SaferCar before you shop a used module or ignore an SRS lamp.
Beginner move: Identify the VIN on /recalls and at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If SaferCar says the inflator is open, that is a dealer campaign — not an indie “we can get a bag from the yard.”
Expert: An unused passenger inflator can sit for 15–20 years and then fail on the first real hit. The recall is the inflator (and often the module it lives in), not “the whole dash is junk.” Do not buy a used airbag. The campaign exists because salvage bags are how this repeats.
