A squeal is not a grind. A grind is not a flush.

Brake squeal vs grind

Wear-indicator squeal is a thin, high chirp at the end of a stop. Grind is grit or metal. Pulsation is a rotor thickness story. Do not buy pads, rotors, and a fluid flush because someone said “while we’re in there.”

The car makes a noise when you slow down. The writer has already written “brakes due.” You need to know which noise you have and which millimeter decides the ticket.

01Name the noise in one sentenceSqueal, grind, groan, or click. Last two seconds of a stop vs the whole pedal. Wet vs dry. Morning only vs every stop. Speed. Front vs you-cannot-tell.Say: High squeal in the last second of a city stop, dry pavement, two weeks. Pedal is firm. No pull.
02Pedal, pull, and warning lampsFirm, soft, or to the floor. Pull left/right. ABS or brake lamp. A soft pedal is a hydraulic problem — that is not a pad quote.Say: Pedal is still high and firm. No ABS lamp. I want pad and rotor millimeters, not a package.
03Ask for four numbersInner and outer pad mm on the axle they want to do, and rotor measured vs discard on that axle. If they only quote “fronts,” ask which side was thinner.Say: What is the thinnest pad in millimeters? What is the rotor measured, and what is the discard stamp?
04On-car cut vs new rotorsA cut rotor must still sit above discard after the cut. If they cannot say the leftover thickness, they are guessing. Pedal pulse often wants new or a measured cut, not “we’ll see.”Say: If you machine them, what thickness is left vs the stamp? If you cannot say, price new rotors as a separate yes.
05Brake fluid is a years conversationFluid absorbs water. Many books say 2–3 years. A copper-strip or a boiling-point tester is a measurement. “It’s dark” is a color. A flush is not required to change pads.Say: I will consider fluid if you have a boiling point or a service-interval date. I will not bundle it as shop supplies.

Do not

Do not authorize rear pads because the fronts squealed.
Do not skip the grind — that can become a rotor and a weekend without a car.
Do not accept “lifetime pads” as a reason to skip the measurement.

Expert notes

What the number means

Wear indicator squeal · mm
A steel tab starts to kiss the rotor around 2–3 mm of lining. It is supposed to annoy you. That is not metal-on-metal. It is also not proof the other axle is due.
Grind / growl · lining gone
Gritty, scraping, worse as you press — lining is gone or a stone is trapped. Rotors are often scored. Ask for photos and remaining steel. Do not drive it to “see if it gets quieter.”
Pedal pulse · mm variation
A steering-wheel or pedal pulse under braking is often rotor thickness variation, not “warped.” A mic around the face finds it. An alignment does not fix DTV.
EV / regen rust · mm + rust
Regen means the friction brakes nap. Pads can look thick and still glaze or rust to the rotor. Thickness can be honest and the noise still be rust. Ask for a photo of the rotor face, not only the mm.
